Building Wheels, Building Wheels.

Building Wheels, Building Wheels.

We build a lot of wheels and we LOVE building wheels. Nothing sets a beloved bike off like a new wheel build. You pick the perfect hub, you pick the perfect rim to interface justttt the tires you need to optimize the feel of your ride. It’s the best - there are many that value it even more than a new frame.

This particular wheelset is for one of the last remaining Paloma Thursday frames. It’s a gold set of Velocity Blunt SS rims that are going to an XTR front hub, and a coaster brake rear hub. 32 hole 2-cross for the front and 36 spoke 3-cross for the rear. I chose this lacing and spoke pattern to lighten the front end up a little where it doesn’t need so much structure - but also because it made it so all 4 spoke lengths were uniformly 268mm. Having one spoke length for a build is super optimal to me and I think I’ll continue this pattern throughout the bike. Can I make ALL the bolts 5MM and just bring 1 wrench? That seems like a fun little detail.

An old rim brake XTR hub to a non-machined rim does not allow the ability ever for any front brake. A subtle equipment decision that dedicates this bike to a minimally controlled riding style. May this build see many rowdy nights out with the friends. May it be tossed over many fences and scratched to unholy hell.

The rear wheel is a Hi Stop coaster brake. I’m going to have to write its own article about what we’re doing with that hub. Well post about that tomorrow!
